ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA (SMGEBRU) - Ethiopia's Parliament will hold a joint session of both Houses of the Federation and of People's Representatives to elect a new President of the federal republic on Monday, October 8, 2007.
The Presidency of Ethiopia is a largely symbolic position currently occupied by Lieutenant Girma Woldegiorgis.
In parliamentary democracies, the Prime Minister is the head of government and the President or Monarch is the head of state, representing the people and government of the country.
It is unclear if President Girma Woldegiorgis, a distinguished Ethiopian who has held many non-governmental and governmental positions will be re-elected.
In related news, in 2008, the capital city of Addis Ababa will hold re-run elections and in 2010, Ethiopia will hold its 4th national elections.
