Ethiopia: Teddy Afro's imprisonment

Samuel M. Gebru

Ethiopian pop singer, the charismatic Tewedros Kassahun (Teddy Afro) was sent to Kaliti Prison, an Ethiopian Federal Prison, pending a Bail Hearing. This stemmed from an incident in 2007 when Teddy allegedly killed an 18-year-old street dweller not far from the Menelik Palace in Addis Ababa. A Taxi driver tipped police with the license plate which turned out to be Teddy's BMW vehicle.

Some Ethiopians abroad have tried to capitalize his imprisonment, pending a bail hearing, as the Government's bid to silence the iconic singer. Teddy has a history of using his popular lyrics to oppose the Government of Ethiopia led by Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. His famous "Yasteseriyal" is one of his most-played song by anti-government critics.

However, his imprisonment is temporary until tomorrow's bail hearing in which it will be determined if he is eligible for bail. In essence, there's a long way ahead before the verdict, so whatever is said abroad is mere speculation. Nevertheless, the politicization of his arrest is not only false but unhealthy in our developing political climate in Ethiopia.

As the old saying goes, "If you did the crime, you gotta pay the time."
